Enterprise Mobility & Children's Books Ireland Join Forces to Boost Child Literacy

5,000 Students Across Ireland Receive Novel "Paper Dragons: The Fight for the Hidden Realm" by Siobhán McDermott

Enterprise Mobility and Children’s Books Ireland have marked the launch of their fourth year of partnership to increase book ownership among children and boost child literacy across Ireland.

Through a grant from Enterprise Mobility’s ROAD Forward initiative, 5,000 copies of “Paper Dragons: The Fight for the Hidden Realm” by Siobhán McDermott were gifted to students in 157 primary schools in 26 counties in Ireland. This year's launch event took place at Stapolin Educate Together National School in Dublin on Thursday, April 10. Local teams from Enterprise Mobility will travel the country for two weeks to transport and deliver the 5,000 books.

"We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Children’s Books Ireland," remarked Brendan Grieve, Enterprise Mobility general manager in Ireland. "By providing these books, we hope to ignite a lifelong passion for reading among young students and support their educational journey. Our teams are passionate about supporting our local communities and have been busy delivering books to schools across the country over the last few weeks."

The theme this year focuses on 'finding your place in the world,' as depicted through protagonist Zhi Ging's journey in McDermott's debut.

McDermott grew up in Hong Kong and was inspired by a mix of both Chinese legends and Irish folklore. “Paper Dragons: The Fight for the Hidden Realm” is her debut novel and is the first installment of McDermott's breathtaking fantasy series which finds orphan Zhi Ging apprenticed to the immortals and about to begin her magical training in an underwater realm.

"I am honoured that my book has been chosen for the fantastic ROAD Forward initiative," expressed McDermott. "My life wouldn't be the same without the countless reading champions who inspired a love of books in me while I was growing up. Being able to introduce students to Paper Dragons, a world I started weaving together after moving to Wicklow, has been the ultimate pinch me moment. I hope Zhi Ging's story resonates with young readers and encourages them to explore and celebrate their own identities."

This project – which has gifted more than 15,000 books in Ireland to date – is funded by Enterprise Mobility's ROAD Forward initiative. Launched in 2020, the ROAD Forward initiative aims to advance social equity by supporting nonprofit organizations focused on early childhood development, youth health and wellness, and career and higher education preparation. To date, over 1,000 organizations have received ROAD Forward grants across more than 400 communities in North America and Europe.

Enterprise Mobility has also recently announced a further extension to the ROAD Forward initiative, which will see an additional $165 million global commitment through 2030. As part of this extension, Children’s Books Ireland has been named as Enterprise Mobility’s key partner in Ireland and will receive an additional $240,000 over five years to further encourage reading in children.

"This collaboration is about more than just giving books; it’s about opening doors to new worlds for children across Ireland," said Elaina Ryan, CEO of Children’s Books Ireland. "We believe every child should have access to quality literature that can inspire them, reflect their identities and give them a way to empathise with others whose lives are unlike their own. Above all, we hope these books represent the start of a joyful relationship with reading for thousands of children."

The counties where schools will be receiving books include Carlow, Cavan, Clare, Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Leitrim, Limerick, Longford, Louth, Monaghan, Mayo, Meath, Offaly, Roscommon, Sligo, Tipperary, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow.
