How I Built my Personal Brand at Enterprise

Do you know someone who always seems to leave a great impression, with everyone singing their praises as soon as they walk out of a room? We’ve been taught not to talk about others, but in your career it can be helpful to have advocates – and you can create them utilizing your own personal brand.

When I began my career 11 years ago, I realized that success would come with both professional and personal growth. Here is what I have learned about building a strong personal brand along the way.

Don’t be afraid to get involved and take control of your career.

During my career I learned the value of reaching out to mentors. I asked as many questions as I could, focusing on my promotability. I jumped at opportunities to take on leadership roles, including the chance to lead diversity initiatives – for example, I recently became the co-chair for Women United, a sector of United Way. Your goal is to grow a great brand image before you even enter the room to discuss a job or promotion.

Set standards for yourself – and exceed them.

Early on in my career, it was suggested that I come up with three characteristics that I hoped would describe how others perceived me – words that made me feel accomplished. I then strived to meet those standards. Empower yourself by coming up with three words to define your personal brand. As my career has progressed with Enterprise, I’ve adjusted those characteristics to fit my goals. The words I’m currently focused on? Consistent, process-oriented, and effective business partner.

Do your research, then get out there and make yourself known.

Use the multitude of resources to find out more about opportunities and career paths you’d like to explore. Gather information on Enterprise’s social profiles and the careers site.

Take opportunities that may be outside of your comfort zone. Events are a great way to get your presentation and networking skills fine-tuned. Share your ideas. You’ll build your confidence and get to hear others’ ideas as well. Continue to put yourself out there and do what’s uncomfortable – that’s how you expand your personal brand.

Meet new people and engage.

LinkedIn is not only a great way to find helpful career articles, it’s also the perfect place to connect with peers and reach out for guidance. Many Enterprise recruiters and employees are active on the platform.

Opportunities for in-person connection at Enterprise are endless – I’ve even had the chance to sit with CEO Pam Nicholson and COO Chrissy Taylor at lunch. Gaining their perspective on the business helped me fine-tune my own skills while reminding me how much I still want to grow.
